NFL Draft 2017: Top target for each team
By John Buhler
Pittsburgh Steelers: Taco Charlton
The Pittsburgh Steelers are running out of time to compete for Super Bowls. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger may only play a year or two more. When he does hang up the spikes, things could get bad in a hurry in the Steel City if they don’t have a replacement for him.
Pittsburgh could go quarterback here at No. 30, but are the Steelers sure that a Patrick Mahomes or a Dais Webb will be able to take the baton from Roethlisberger and run with it? The Steelers will eventually find Roethlisberger’s successor, but not in this draft.
The smart play for the Steelers is to continue to build its defensive front. Bud Dupree could come alive here in 2017. If not, well, the Steelers could look for big things out of Michigan Wolverines standout Taco Charlton.
In four years in Ann Arbor, Charlton was one of the veteran leaders that helped turn around the Big Ten blue-blood under head coach Jim Harbaugh. Charlton had 91 tackles, 28.0 for a loss of yardage and 19.0 quarterback sacks.
Michigan was lost when Charlton arrived on campus in 2013. He got better every season he played for the Wolverines. The Pittsburgh pass rush needs to be top-tier to help bring along Mike Tomlin’s defense. Charlton could be available for Pittsburgh at No. 30.
