What was the best match from every single WrestleMania in history?

“The Granddaddy Of Them All.” “The Showcase of the Immortals.” “The Greatest Spectacle in Sports Entertainment.” Call it whatever you want but there’s absolutely no denying that WrestleMania is the biggest stage in professional wrestling. Period.

Since its inception in 1985, WrestleMania has become one of the biggest events in live entertainment, and in its 33rd year, it’s bigger than ever. Tens of thousands of people flock from all over the world to attend and millions more sit in the comfort of their own homes and watch on pay-per-view. A WrestleMania moment can make a career and a WrestleMania debacle can ruin one just as easily. No matter what anyone says, every professional wrestler in the world dreams of going to WrestleMania and performing in front of the world, but let’s be honest here, not every match in WrestleMania history has been good. There are quite a few that have been really bad and some have been downright atrocious. But that’s a conversation for another day.

Every year, we anticipate and speculate which match is going to steal the show. Sometimes it’s the main event and sometimes it’s not. Every competitor wants to make their match the highlight of the night, so let’s take a look back at every single WrestleMania in history and decide which match was the best, starting with the inaugural event at Madison Square Garden.

WrestleMania

Hulk Hogan & Mr. T vs. Rowdy Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff

When you go back and watch the first WrestleMania, it’s quite clear that there really wasn’t a match on the card that could be thrown into the “great” category. It was Tito Santana’s job to get the crowd into it, which he did a decent enough job of in his win against The Executioner, and Andre the Giant throwing money into the crowd following the $15,000 Bodyslam Challenge against Big John Studd was an entertaining moment, as was Bobby Heenan coming in and snatching the bag from him was pretty funny. But there wasn’t anything spectacular.

With that being said, the honor has to go to the main event which saw champion Hulk Hogan team with Mr. T to take on Rowdy Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff. It’s a shame that there wasn’t a one-on-one title match between Hogan and Piper for the title but Vince wanted to bring in the celebrity for some extra coverage and Mr. T was really hot at the time so there you go.

The crowd was pretty excited for this one and Hogan and Orndorff were set to start things off, but everybody wanted to see Mr. T and Piper go at it and we got some of that. Clubber Lang looked really awkward in there for a while but Piper held it together and used some mat wrestling — which is funny because that’s not his strong suit at all. That didn’t last long as a brawl broke out that got Muhammad Ali in there to break things up, which sent the crowd into a frenzy and it was all classic 1980s stuff from there. Double noggin knockers, old folding chairs and all of that fun stuff.

In the end, Piper avoided a pin (shocking) and Mr. Wonderful took the three count from Hogan following some involvement from Bob Orton and his cast (more classic 80s) and Superfly Jimmy Snuka. A technical masterpiece it was not but it was enough to get the job done.
