Auston Matthews continues to set records, passing Wendel Clark to set the Toronto Maple Leafs’ rookie goal record.

Ever since the Toronto Maple Leafs made Auston Matthews the first overall pick of the 2016 NHL Draft, the weight of a failing franchise has been on his shoulders. They were very lucky to get him, overcoming the odds to win the lottery to get him. In Matthews’ debut, he scored four goals, and he hasn’t slowed down, demolishing records in his path. Matthews’ latest victim is the Maple Leafs rookie goal record, formerly held by Wendel Clark. With his 35th goal of the season, he will be in the record books yet again.

Matthews shows off why he’s been scoring so many goals as a rookie. Not only is he very skilled, he knows where he has to go to score goals. Matthews isn’t afraid to dig in around the crease, which is where you go to score goals. His 35th goal puts him past Winnipeg Jets rookie sensation Patrik Laine for the rookie lead. Matthews also picked up his 62nd points, which also puts him just ahead of him.

He came into the league with a ton of hype, and rightfully so. So far, Matthews has delivered and has proven to be worth every ounce of hype. Clark was a heck of a player and did some pretty special things in his hey day. To pass him is a great accomplishment. Matthews is showing he can handle the weight of a franchise. Expect him to win the Calder, especially if he can hold his lead in goals and points over Laine. Matthews has been a huge reason for the Maple Leafs’ turnaround which could see them in the postseason.
