The NFL is not known for its trades, but we’ve seen an uptick in recent years. Before we get into the draft, here are five moves that teams should make.

5. Tony Romo to the Denver Broncos

Trade: Romo to Denver for fifth-round pick (No. 177 overall)

We could have gone one of two ways here, but let’s be realistic. Jerry Jones is holding onto Romo for two reasons. One, he is hoping to keep him away from the Houston Texans, mostly because he doesn’t want competition for back pages in Texas. Second, Jones is trying to add another draft pick in what is a loaded class.

Broncos general manager John Elway has been on record stating he won’t trade for Romo, but this game of chicken might end with Elway flinching. Denver is a Super Bowl contender with a healthy Romo, and likely not a playoff team with the current situation under center. Trevor Siemian ranges from a poor starter to a great backup, while former first-round pick Paxton Lynch looked very raw in his limited time as a rookie.

Denver has the cap space to accommodate Romo’s salary, which would be $14 million after a deal was made. In addition, the Broncos have 10 picks and an already-solid roster, so parting with a fifth rounder isn’t crippling. While it remains unlikely that Elway trades for the 37-year-old due to injuries, he may be realizing that a bidding war with the Texans — who have twice Denver’s cap space — wouldn’t end well.
