The Flash has only a few episodes left in season 3 but is making fans take a bit of a break before it speeds toward a final showdown with Savitar.

A traditional 23-episode TV season has a certain cadence: start with a bunch of new episodes in the fall, take a hiatus at the holidays, then come back with more before hitting the breaks in April to make sure May sweeps are loaded up. The Flash is no exception, as its going away for most of this month.

What makes hitting the pause button on season 3 so agonizing? Not only is the big mystery, the identity of Savitar, still up in the air (and preventing the villain from turning around his disappointing start) but the last new episode ended on a cliffhanger.

After suffering a severe wound at the hands of Abra Kadabra, Caitlin Snow needed some emergency surgery from Julian Albert. Though she initially appeared to come through it fine, the final scene saw her flatline despite the best efforts of Julian, Cisco Ramon and H.R. Wells.

Left with no other option, Julian tore off the necklace that had been regulating Caitlin’s powers, which kicked in and healed her wound. Alas, she also went full Killer Frost as a result, lashing out with an icy blast that looked like it caught all three of her friends.

Combined with Barry Allen’s determination to go into the future to find the answers he seeks to save Iris West, the next episode looks like it could be a big one. Alas, it won’t be on for several weeks, as “The Once and Future Flash” doesn’t air until Tuesday, April 25.

Here’s a trailer to hold you over in the meantime:

Looks pretty grim, with Barry encountering depressing future versions of Cisco and himself and what appears to be a wheelchair-bound Wally West. Hang on tight through these next few Flash-less weeks, as we’ll be getting set to cover the race to the finish of season 3 here on FanSided.com starting the last week of April.
