WWE WrestleMania 33 results and highlights from the wild match between AJ Styles and Shane McMahon

AJ Styles didn’t have a match at WWE WrestleMania 33. That’s where it all started for him after he saw his opportunity at the World Championship get taken away. So he took drastic measures. Styles attacked SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon, putting his head through a car door.

Shane O Mac then told him that he finally had his match, challenging him to go toe-to-toe at WrestleMania 33. Mixed with high-risk elbow drops and brawls, Styles accepted.

Cocky, arrogant and unafraid, Styles was looking to show up Shane O Mac early on. However, McMahon showed quickly that he wasn’t going to be a pushover. Still, Styles had the early edge, even mocking McMahon’s patented money shuffle after putting him in the corner with a snapmare.

Shane would soon repay the favor, however. The two adversaries locked up once again and McMahon proved that he was here to rumble. He put AJ down with a few hip tosses and then a nice belly-to-back suplex. Styles then made an error in trying to throw hands with Shane O Mac—a battle briefly won by the latter.

However, The Phenomenal One would regain control as McMahon charged at him on the ropes, Styles ducked and pulled down the rope, sending him flying over the announcer’s table. He then had the opportunity to go after the commish, and did so. It was short-lived, though, as McMahon countered and tried to even the score. Then, when Styles tried to go for a Phenomenal Forearm, Shane caught the rope and sent the former champ tumbling.

With the advantage once again for the time being, Shane O Mac started unleashing his arsenal of jabs once again, with a little bit of flare of course. And the final blow brought Styles to the ground.

Before long, though, Styles came to and it felt like an even playing field once again. That’s when AJ tried to hit a home run as he locked in the Calf Crusher. Not known for his technical ability, though, McMahon surprised the former champ by reversing it into a rear-naked choke. AJ ultimately was able to break the hold, but he realized again he was in for a war.

As the two continued to do battle, AJ Styles again looked to hit the big one. He got to the top rope after putting Shane down and looked to go for the 450 Splash. Instead, he was caught by McMahon in a crazy triangle choke spot.

Even after all of this, though, Styles was not to be deterred. So when McMahon got ahead of himself and left himself vulnerable, AJ pounced and hit the Styles Clash—but that wasn’t enough, only good for a two-count.

The fight then took the two men into the corner, but with limbs flying, the referee got too close to the acton. Thus, he was taken out and put down on the ground. For whatever reason, AJ then thought it wise to go under the ring and get two trashcans. He then set Shane up to deliver a taste of his own medicine with a Coast-to-Coast. But McMahon was ready and popped up and hit Styles with the can. Shane then set Styles up and showed him how to properly deliver the move:

But even that wasn’t enough to end it. So Shane had to go even more high risk, trying to go off the turnbuckle and through AJ and the announcer’s table with an elbow. Instead, he crashed and burned. But he wasn’t done. Styles tried to capitalize by pulling him back into the ring and hitting the Phenomenal Forearm, but Shane O Mac popped up and hit a wild tornado DDT. McMahon then went up high and busted out a Shooting Star Press—but it came up empty.

That finally allowed AJ Styles to hit the Phenomenal Forearm. After all that, Shane had nothing left. Thus, it was the 1-2-3 and Styles was able to pick up his first-ever win at WrestleMania.
