Fernando Torres was once a player that commanded not one, but two different record breaking transfer fees for two different clubs.  Now he’s missing sitters.
In 2007, Liverpool pounced on the Atlético Madrid striker for a then club record fee of £20 million. After scoring 65 goals for Liverpool, Chelsea broke the British transfer record to acquire the striker for £50M. Needless to say, that move did not end up working out for him or Chelsea.
After a loan move to AC Milan, and subsequent loan and purchase to Atlético Madrid again, Torres seemed to have settled back into being an above-average striker in Spain, although prone to the occasional gaffe in front of goal.
While nothing can top his legendary miss against Manchester United in 2011, Torres again fell victim to missing a sitter.

Playing against Real Sociedad, Torres found himself in front of goal with an early cross from the right wing. After a mix up between two Sociedad teammates, he had the entire net to aim for and subsequently hit the post. Both the defender and keeper come full-stop after their miscommunication, fully expecting Torres to hit the target and increase Atlético’s lead. Alas, he fails.
But wait! There’s more! The ball rebounds off the post while the goal keeper is still nestled on the ground. Torres is once again in great position to increase the lead. He takes a touch to set himself up for an easy four yard curler and… smacks the ball into the side netting. Relief for one side; anguish for another.

Fernando Torres is now 33 years old, and is likely at his last big club of his career. He has scored five goals for Atlético Madrid in 21 appearances this year. They sit third in La Liga, tied with Sevilla. A big miss against current sixth place Real Sociedad could possibly damper the Diego Simeone-led club’s title ambitions this year, however frail they may be at this point in the season.
