Bayern Munich are closing in on a Bundesliga record fifth straight league title. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have a 13 point lead on second-place RB Leipzig. Hoffenheim sit third in the table, one point ahead of Borussia Dortmund.
Despite starting keeper Manuel Neuer missing the game with an injury, Bayern continued their dominating play with a 6-0 win over Augsburg this weekend. Striker Robert Lewandowski scored three goals on Saturday. Thomas Muller has rediscovered his goalscoring touch. The German international scored two against Augsburg and has scored three times in his past two games. After setting up the first Lewandowski goal, Thiago Alcantara scored after a beautiful pair of passes from Lewandowski and Muller.
On Friday, Hoffenheim traveled to Berlin to face fifth-place Hertha. Peter Pekarik opened the scoring for Hertha, but the lead would not last for the home side. Seven minutes later, 20-year-old Hertha defender Maximilian Mittelstadt was called for a handball inside of his only penalty area. Croatian Andrej Kramaric scored from the spot to level the score. In the 58th minute, Mittelstadt picked up his second yellow of the game, forcing Hertha to go down to 10 men. Center-back Niklas Sule blasted an absolutely into the top right corner of the net from over 25 yards out. Ten minutes later Hoffenheim sealed the win, with Kramaric scoring his second of the game.
Hoffenheim defenders Sebastian Rudy and Sule have already signed with Bayern for next season. Rudy and Joshua Kimmich are expected to be the replacements in the Bayern starting XI for the retiring Philipp Lahm and Xabi Alonso.
