Sidney Crosby is just one of the NHL players who is disappointed by the league’s stance against the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The NHL will not be allowing players to go to the 2018 Olympics. Of course, this doesn’t mean players won’t still go. They just won’t be supported by the league and likely won’t be insured in case of injury. However, players are starting to express their disagreement with the decision. The resistance now has Sidney Crosby, the best hockey player in the world, on its side.
Crosby says NHL’s Olympic decision is disappointing: "I really thought something was going to be able to get worked out."

Maybe now the league will consider other options. Because the schedule for the 2017-18 season has not been released, nothing is official yet. The NHL can still change their minds. If enough players raise a stink about the decision to not go to the Olympics, they’ll likely at least consider righting the wrong.
Crosby getting involved changes everything. With many NHL stars speaking out against the decision, the ball is in the NHL’s court. The NHLPA is naturally supporting their own, which puts all the pressure on the owners and Gary Bettman to make something happen. Crosby wasn’t as blunt as some of the other players, but his message will be heard loud and clear.

The 2018 Olympics will be held in South Korea. It remains to be seen if NHL players will be allowed to go, but it doesn’t look good right now. Players who go regardless of the league’s decision will likely suffer a punishment of some kind. However, it’s a punishment players might be willing to take. This could significantly hurt the NHL’s standing in the global market. Many players consider it an honor to play for their country. Why would they come over to North America if they know the NHL doesn’t want them playing in the Olympics?
