Brock Stassi smacked a solo shot home run for the first hit of his MLB career on Monday night.

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Brock Stassi finally got his first hit on Monday night against the New York Mets. After eight at-bats in five games, Stassi stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning and smacked a solo shot home run to center field, making it a one-run game as the Phillies’ attempted a late rally to tie it up.

The last time a Phillies player hit a home run for their first career hit was in 2015 in a situation sort of similar when former Phillies rookie outfielder Darnell Sweeney came in and pinched hit, smacking a home run to make it a one-run score late in the game against the Miami Marlins. The Phillies went on to win that game 4-2. Unfortunately, the impact of Stassi’s hit was not enough to form a comeback win, though it was close.

The Phillies couldn’t feed off of Stassi’s homer, and ended up losing to the Mets 4-3 on Monday night. The Phillies’ fan base didnt seem to be too affected by the loss though, fans on Twitter erupted with excitement as the 27-year old let the big league pitchers know that he is here to compete. It took him a little bit to get acquainted with the majors, he had eight total plate appearances and ended up walking three times and striking out twice. The other two times he went hitless, until Monday night.

Stassi sits behind first baseman Tommy Joseph, who is batting a very disappointing .100 after 20 at-bats. If Stassi keeps taking advantage of his occasional plate appearances, he could see an opportunity to take over the starting job at first base. We wont get ahead of ourselves though, for now lets just hope that fan was kind enough to return that ball to Stassi to throw on the shelf.
