Although some thought Adrian Peterson would be a hot commodity on the open market, it looks like he’ll remain a free agent for a bit longer.

It’s hard to believe that we’re over a month into NFL free agency and future hall of fame running back Adrian Peterson remains on the market. Although he’s struggled to stay healthy as of late, Peterson is still one of the league’s top running backs when he is on the field.

Yet according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Peterson likely won’t sign with a team until after the NFL Draft. Although Rapoport goes on to mention that teams involved will continue to monitor Peterson…New England Patriots, anyone?

While this situation may come as a surprise to some, it makes sense given the strength of this year’s draft class at running back. Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook and Christian McCaffrey are all talented, workhorse running backs that can immediately start in the NFL.

With those prospects available, as well as many others in the NFL Draft, teams are going to wait before resorting to a 32-year-old veteran coming off another major injury. The NFL is a copycat league and given the success of the Dallas Cowboys with running back Ezekiel Elliott last season, teams will be looking to mimic their success.

Peterson may have to loosen his reported requirements for a new team as well. Multiple reports have stated that Peterson is looking for a hefty pay day as well as playing for a Super Bowl contender. Beggars can’t be choosers and at this point, Peterson is certainly a beggar.

After the draft, we’ll be able to tell which teams whiffed on getting themselves a young running back prospect and their attention will turn to Peterson. It’ll be up to Peterson to face the reality and take whatever offers may come his way.
