David Villa has been one of the best players in Major League Soccer ever since he entered the league in 2014. He may have just scored the best goal of his MLS career.

In the closing minutes of the match between the NYCFC and Philadelphia Union, David Villa decided to try an ambitious effort to seal the three points for the away side. Just inside the halfway line, Villa saw the Philadelphia Union keeper off of his line, and decided to try an ambitious 50-yard chip shot to seal off the win.

It worked.

"50 yards out. FIFTY.Just a ridiculous goal from @Guaje7Villa 🙊 https://t.co/YZY6UFo1Lv— Major League Soccer (@MLS) April 15, 2017"

While Andre Blake, the Union’s keeper should — and will be — ashamed at letting in this shot go in, take nothing away from the strike. Any time a shot from near the half is attempted, the reaction from teammates and fans alike is met with disdain. However, a few times in a season, that reaction is turned on its head.

The shot marks the longest goal in MLS history, which is not surprising considering who the scorer is.

After scoring 18 goals in his first year in the league, he upped his total to 23 in 33 appearances for NYCFC last year, helping NYCFC to its first playoff appearance in club’s history. This season, Villa already has 4 goals in 6 matches, tied for 5th in the league behind Erick Torres, Diego Valeri, Fanendo Adi, and Josef Martinez.

The former Barcelona man is looking to keep NYCFC in the playoff hunt for the second year running, and goals like this will certainly help the club in its search for their first MLS Cup, or, possibly, their first Supporter’s Shield ever.
