Looks like we’ll be kicking off the season with the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs at Gillette Stadium.

Every year the defending Super Bowl champions kick off the following season and this year is no different. It has been announced that the New England Patriots will face of against the Kansas City Chiefs to kick off the 2017 NFL Season.

These teams haven’t faced each other since the Patriots defeated the Chiefs in the divisional round of the 2016 season where New England moved on to the AFC Championship after an impressive 27-20 victory.

The last time these teams happened to go up against each other in the regular season was in 2014, where the Chiefs dismantled the Patriots in a huge 41-14 victory.

Kansas City leads the all-time series versus New England with a 17-14-3 combined record, which includes postseason games as well.

Another interesting tidbit about this opener is the last time the Patriots opened the regular season facing the Chiefs was after their perfect regular season and crushing defeat in pursuit of their undefeated season against the New York Giants. But what was more interesting was the injury that occurred the following season when the Patriots took on the Chiefs.

Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady suffered a season-ending left knee ACL tear against the Chiefs during the 2008 opener. The Patriots went on to win the game, but finished the season missing the playoffs for the first time during the Brady era.

Hearing the news about opening the season off versus the Chiefs has to jog some terrifying memories for Brady wouldn’t you say? Let’s hope for the sake of the NFL and ratings that history doesn’t repeat itself.
