Madison Bumgarner finds himself on the disabled list after injuring himself on a dirt bike during the San Francisco Giants’ off day.

There are things that Major League Baseball pitchers should never do during the season. Tinkering with drones is one, especially during the postseason (yes, I’m talking to you, Trevor Bauer), and riding dirt bikes is another. Madison Bumgarner was on a dirt bike during the team’s day off and he ended up on the disabled list as a result.

Ken Rosenthal posted on Facebook that Bumgarner is on the DL with bruised ribs and a left shoulder AC sprain. Whether that shoulder injury is a grade one or two sprain is yet to be determined. MLB.com reports that he is out of the hospital and resting at the hotel. For now he’s looking at a 10-day stint on the disabled list, but that’s likely to be reevaluated as they run more tests.

Bumgarner has been off to a rough start this season, with four games and 27 innings of work. He’s 0-3 in those four games, with 28 strikeouts and a 3.00 ERA. While Bumgarner’s record looks spotty so far this season, his 92 mph average pitch speed for his four-seam fastball in 2017 has been pretty consistent with his average (92.72 mph).

It’s not the kind of start that Bumgarner needs to help guide the Giants back to the top of the NL West, and this injury to his throwing arm will not help things at all.

Things were looking good for Bumgarner at the start of the season when he broke an Opening Day record with his two home runs, a first for any pitcher on the first day of the season. Bumgarner’s arm was as strong as his bat on Opening Day but a late rally from the Arizona Diamondbacks ended up in a Giants loss that day.
