Starting Pitchers

High Salary Option

Chris Archer ($10,100): Before we go too far down this road, lets be clear: of the high salary options on the board, Archer is the only play between the two. Hyun-jin Ryu at $10,200 is a non-starter for me. Archer however is more feasible, as he has been sharp for the majority of the year, before taking a downturn in his last time out. While he will be opposed by a strong Orioles lineup, he has the chance to live up to the billing.

High Value Options

Jason Vargas ($8,000): Not that I ever expected to say this at any point, in my life really, but Vargas the best play of the day on the mound. The southpaw has been exceptional thus far on the year, and has averaged 30 points on the year. While he will come back to Earth eventually, I expect from him to thrive tonight against a White Sox lineup that has been up and down.

Amir Garrett ($6,700): In a day where the best play may be to stack a pair of lower salary arms with the price you would spend on one, consider Garrett. The Reds rookie continues to impress, as he is fresh off an outing where he struck out 12 Orioles over seven innings. While the Brewers have some thump in their linup, Garrett has a ton of upside to gain at a reasonable rate.

Rank Em:

  1. Archer
  2. Vargas
  3. Zack Greinke ($9,400)
  4. Garrett
  5. Francisco Liriano ($9,700)

Catchers

High Salary Option

Matt Wieters ($4,400): Admittedly, this is a big price for Wieters, but a trip to Coors Field justifies, as does the pairing with lefty Tyler Anderson. He has labored through his starts early in the year and does not look destined to stay in the rotation for the long haul. A fringy starter against a bat that connects well off lefties bodes well for giving Wieters a go.

High Value Option

Buster Posey ($3,900): Frankly, I consider most prices south of $4,000 to be a value proposition. So if I can land a player of the caliber of Posey for that price, on a day where he is facing a left-hander (Hyun-jin Ryu), I’m not hesitating to add him in ink and keep it moving.

Rank Em:

  1. Posey
  2. Wieters
  3. Jonathan Lucroy ($4,300)
  4. Willson Contreras ($3,700)
  5. Jeff Bandy/Manny Pina ($3,000)
