The Kansas City Chiefs have enjoyed four consecutive winning seasons, but only have one playoff win to show for them. General manager John Dorsey has done a tremendous job of building one of the league’s best rosters, but a consistent problem has remained under center. Alex Smith is an average quarterback, holding back a potentially great roster. While the quarterback class going into this draft is middling, it provides good prospects with the right coaching.
Head coach Andy Reid has a knack with quarterbacks, dating back to his time with the Eagles. Deshaun Watson, who many compare to Smith, would be a terrific fit in Reid’s west coast system. Watson, who led Clemson to its first national championship since 1981, has the smarts and athleticism to become a franchise face. While there are concerns about his arm strength, the former ACC star has the luxury of time in Kansas City. Watson would likely sit behind Smith for a year while growing into his 6-foot-2 frame and learning the playbook, and then take over in 2018. Smith is a realistic comparison, although this space would suggest a more accurate Donovan McNabb.
