Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Patrick Mahomes may go inside of the top-10. Will the Kansas City Chiefs trade up to get a new franchise quarterback?

This may not be the greatest quarterback draft of all time, but there are at least a few signal callers that will go in the top-10. Frankly, it would be a reach to draft any quarterback in the top-10 this year, but we could see as many as three off the board before the New Orleans Saints pick at No. 11. One player to keep an eye on is Texas Tech Red Raiders’ Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes has undeniable arm talent, but is the rawest of the top-end quarterback prospects in this draft. That being said, NFL teams seem to love this gunslinger from Tyler, Texas. According to Matthew Fairburn of Syracuse.com, Mahomes is now presumed to be a top-10 pick. The Chiefs have wanted this kid from the jump and might be willing to trade up to get him at No. 27.

While Alex Smith has helped the Kansas City Chiefs win regular season games, his ultra-conservative approach to quarterbacking has undermined Kansas City’s Super Bowl dreams the last few years. Smith’s finite quarterbacking ceiling is maybe getting to a conference championship.

Kansas City should return one of the NFL’s most potent rosters. Should the Chiefs get a franchise quarterback to eventually replace Smith, Kansas City could extend its Super Bowl window significantly.

Mahomes will need obvious refinement, but he is reminiscent of some guy Chiefs head coach Andy Reid used to coach named Brett Favre in the 1990s. Reid was part of Mike Holmgren’s offense staff with the Green Bay Packers before first becoming a head coach with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Trading up to get a quarterback would be a bold move for the Chiefs to make, but if Reid and company think Mahomes is their guy, then go get him. Other teams like the Arizona Cardinals, the Houston Texans and the Pittsburgh Steelers could all want Mahomes. If Kansas City does move up, look for teams like the Tennessee Titans (No. 5) or the Buffalo Bills (No. 10) to be where Kansas City can get Mahomes.
