Will Canelo Alvarez fight GGG next after his one-sided dominating performance on Saturday night against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr?

The answer is yes. It was formally announced Saturday night in Las Vegas, the much-anticipated matchup will take place in September.

While Canelo Alvarez was taking target practice on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in front of 20,510 fans Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, middleweight king Gennady “GGG” Golovkin was on hand to watch the carnage with his promoter Tom Loeffler and trainer Abel Sanchez.

What everyone in attendance and the fans watching on Pay Per View didn’t know is that HBO was ready to go with a post-fight promo to announce the fight.

Prior to that, In what could be described at best as a clinic or exhibition put on by Canelo, the only thing left to ask was what is next for Mexico’s top pugilist.

The lights went dark as GGG made his way to the ring in a traditional ring walk style with Abel Sanchez in tow.

As the two were side by side, after quickly shaking hands, Max Kellerman turned to Alvarez and asked him if this means the two of them will be fighting in September, Alvarez replied, “Yes sir, yes sir, it’s done.” Kellerman then turned to GGG and asked for his thoughts. Golovkin said, “I feel very excited. We’re ready.” Both GGG and Alvarez agreed they were the toughest opponents of their respective careers.

Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions has taken a lot of criticism over the past year for distancing themselves from GGG. It seems tonight closed that gap in making this dream matchup a reality.

Size clearly didn’t matter in the catch-weight contest that many thought could be a tough test for Canelo who has continued to move up in weight putting an exclamation point on whether or not he can compete in the middleweight division.

If there were any questions surrounding whether or not the pride of Guadalajara should be the next opponent to face GGG, common sense would suggest this is the most logical matchup for everyone involved.

While Chavez Jr. might not be the best litmus test to judge whether or not Canelo will have a chance at beating GGG, this is the matchup boxing fans have been waiting for.

They won’t have to wait much longer. Another win for boxing in 2017.
