Canelo Alvarez vs. GGG set for September 16

Canelo Alvarez vs. GGG, the biggest fight in boxing, was announced in the ring following Alvarez’s shutout over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Canelo Alvarez got a showcase fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. He wanted to humiliate his opponent and accomplished that with a unanimous 120-108 decision on all three cards.

The fight was a dud and drew audible boos from the crowd because of how one-sided it was. But in the end, the pay-per-view was worth the price of admission if only because of what happened during the post-fight interview.

We thought we would see Canelo call out GGG, who was in attendance, before Oscar de la Hoya would proceed to book him against yet another overmatched opponent. Instead, we got an in-ring promotion of Alvarez’s upcoming fight, which will be against … GGG. And boxing fans can even mark it on their calendar for September 16:

The promo video got everybody in the crowd hyped up. It was even better to see Golovkin in the ring trading verbal shots with Alvarez. It’ll only make the four-month long build-up even more palpable.

It may seem like Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder would be the biggest fight in boxing, considering he sold out Wembley Stadium. Or Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather, because of who they are. But Canelo and GGG are much bigger stars in the States than Joshua and Wilder, while McGregor vs. Mayweather would probably be as competitive as the Alvarez-Chavez Jr. fight.

This is a fight that should’ve happened after Canelo beat Miguel Cotto, but as they say, better late than never. And after seeing GGG fail to earn the knockout against his last opponent, Daniel Jacobs, de la Hoya definitely considered this the perfect time to book the fight.

Given how the two fighters looked in their last bouts, the betting odds could be dead even when they’re released. But it’ll be a spectacle no matter what, and it’ll offer a definitive answer regarding who the best middleweight in the world is.
