Infinity Stones will pave the way for almost everything to come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but did any appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2?

Spiler Warning: If you’ve yet to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, turn back now if you don’t want any spoilers.

Infinity Stones played a key role in the first film in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Ronan the Accuser used the Power Stone for his own gain, despite Thanos’ insistence to get it for him. However, the Guardians defeated Ronan, Star-Lord was able to wield the stone (thus proving his not-100-percent human genealogy) and then it was given to the Nova Corp to be protected.

However, the Infinity Stones are going to have a major role outside of just single movies like the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. Thanos is looking for all them to complete the Infinity Gauntlet and wield unimaginable power. That’s what everything is ultimately building to. It’ll most likely be a critical point in the plot for Avengers: Infinity War and onward.

Thus, it would stand to reason that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 might feature at least one other Infinity Stone. Given that they’ve already seen one stone and dealt with Thanos, that would make sense.

However, there are no Infinity Stones — and there’s also no Thanos — in GotG Vol. 2. When you see the film, though, that all makes sense. First off, we would’ve already heard if Thanos had another stone in present day. And considering that Vol. 2 is set in 2014, it then makes sense that he and the Infinity Stones don’t have a place.

What’s more, Vol. 2 is very much self-contained in terms of its plot. Subsequently, there’s not a great deal that factors into the larger story in the MCU. Thus, not having any Infinity Stones involved makes sense. It looks like we’ll have to wait until the next Marvel film to see if we see another stone.
