5 key games that won Chelsea the title
3. Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur (Nov. 26)
Following an embarrassing loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in Chelsea’s first London derby of the season, the Blues were eager to defeat Spurs. Over the last two seasons, Chelsea and Tottenham’s relationship has been scrappy on the pitch, to say the least.
Nov. 26 was the first time the two had met after Eden Hazard’s late game-tying goal against Spurs to secure the title for Leicester in 2015-16. Spurs wanted revenge on the Blues and with Chelsea taking over top spot in the table the previous week, what better time could their be to redeem themselves?
The Blues were on a remarkable six-game win streak since switching formations and no one in the league looked to have an answer. Conte’s side had recorded clean sheets in all six games; Chelsea were not simply beating teams, they were dismantling them.
However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side struck first. Spurs ended their rivals’ streak as Christian Eriksen secured a pass from Dele Alli and found the back of the net from a shot taken from outside the 18-yard box.
The shot stunned and silenced Stamford Bridge.
Were Spurs going to be the club to end the streak? No. Not this time, at least.
With seconds winding down before halftime, Pedro bent a brilliant shot into the top right-hand corner of the net to level the game at 1-1.
Chelsea would score the game’s only other goal in the 51st minute as Victor Moses scored off a brilliant pass from Diego Costa.
The Blues had survived another test. Chelsea found themselves down early to one of their biggest rivals, a top four team in the league, and managed to find a way to win. With a trip to the Etihad looming, the Blues were on top of the world.
