Former New York Yankees great Derek Jeter, surrounded by family and friends, was honored Sunday with having his No. 2 jersey retired at Yankees Stadium’s Monument Park.

The Captain had his day. Flanked by past New York Yankees teammates and coaches and surrounded by throngs of friends and admirers, Derek Jeter on Sunday was honored by having his No. 2 uniform retired. It was enshrined at Monument Park at Yankee Stadium.

Yankees fans will forever remember the body of Jeter’s work. From his 2001 World Series-saving flip to the way he dived into stands to catch foul balls. And rise bloodied. Jeter also had the flair for the dramatic, clubbing a home run for career hit No. 3,000 and leading off the 2000 World Series against the New York Mets with a first-pitch homer.

The sixth overall selection in the 1992 draft, the Kalamazoo, Michigan, product quickly rose through the minor leagues and made his Yankees debut in 1995. A year later, he was the starting shortstop, a position he held until retiring in 2014.

Along the way, Jeter was named the 1996 AL Rookie of the Year and 2000 World Series MVP. He was selected to 14 All-Star Games and earned five Gold Gloves and five Silver Slugger awards.

Oh, and he has five World Series championship rings.

Among the former teammates scheduled to attend Sunday’s pregame ceremony were David Cone, Reggie Jackson, Tino Martinez, Hideki Matsui, Paul O’Neill, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera and Bernie Williams. Representing all of Jeter’s former coaches were Joe Torre and Willie Randolph.

Does anyone find it curious Alex Rodriguez was absent from the event? Yeah, didn’t think so.

Ironically, the Yankees on Sunday played the Houston Astros, earning an 11-6 victory. Back in 1992, the Astros owned the No. 1 overall selection in the draft. Bypassing a skinny kid named Jeter, they went with Phil Nevin.

Next stop for Jeter: Cooperstown, New York.
