The American League leading Houston Astros’ injury woes continue as catcher Brian McCann is placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list.

On Sunday, the Houston Astros announced that catcher Brian McCann will be placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list. The move is retroactive to Saturday, making McCann eligible again to play for the Astros this weekend in when the Astros welcome the Baltimore Orioles to Minute Maid Park.

The Houston Astros carried a 29-15 record into action Monday at home versus the Detroit Tigers. The hot-start was due in large part to McCann. Prior to his injury, McCann carried a slash line of .269/.365/.487. McCann has slugged six home runs, and walked 17 times on the young season.

McCann was acquired from the Yankees this offseason in a trade and follows battery mate Dallas Keuchel to the disabled list. Kuechel was dominant in his nine starts this season compiling a 7-0 record with an American League leading 1.84 earned run average. Keuchel was sent to the 10-day disabled list on Saturday with a pinched nerve.

Thankfully, the Astros have an above-average backup for McCann in Evan Gattis. In 107 plate appearances this season, Gattis has put together a slash line of .269/.355/.419.  Gattis has hit three home runs , and walked 10 times this season.

In 2016 Gattis put together an excellent season. He slashed .251/.319/.508 and mashed a career-high 32 home runs in just under 499 plate appearances.

To fill McCann’s place on the 25-man roster, the Astros will call up Juan Centeno from Triple A. Centeno has been crushing the baseball this season for the Fresno Grizzlies in the Pacific Coast League putting together a .368/.395/.487 slash line in 83 plate appearances.

However, in his limited Major League experience, Centeno has struggled. In primarily reserve action with the Mets and Twins from 2013-16, Centeno hit .236/.290/.338 with 51 strikeouts in only 251 plate appearances.

The Astros hot start has given them a nice 5.5 game cushion over the suddenly scorching hot Texas Rangers in the American League West standings. The Astros will continue their 13-game home-stand with four games against the Detroit Tigers followed by a weekend series with the Baltimore Orioles.
