Wonder Woman is shattering the superhero glass ceiling in more than one way. Patty Jenkins is the first female director for a Marvel or DC film.

Gal Gadot is already making a name for herself as the star of the first female superhero blockbuster. But the Wonder Woman actress isn’t the only impressive talent behind-the-scenes of the upcoming film. Patty Jenkins is onboard as the first female director of a Marvel or DC film.

But who is she?

Well, before setting her sights on Wonder Woman’s golden lasso, Jenkins stunned the entertainment industry with her first feature film, Monster. The 2003 drama won Charlize Theron an Oscar, Golden Globe and SAG Award for Best Actress. Jenkins won her fair share of awards too, including Best First Feature at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Monster follows the true story of a convicted serial killer, Aileen Wuornos. Theron stars as the Daytona Beach prostitute-turned-killer, alongside Christina Ricci as her lover, Selby. The film portrays the intricacies of the relationship between Wuornos and Selby, as well as Wuornos’ transition from killing for self-defense to killing for greed.

The story line of Monster may not have a lot in common with that of Wonder Woman, but Jenkins was able to establish herself as a female director with an eye for female stories. She’s also an accomplished T.V. director.

Jenkins directed the pilot episode of AMC’s The Killing, a show about a female detective who investigates a murder case involving a mayoral campaign. She returned to direct the finale. Jenkins also directed episodes of Entourage, Betrayal and Arrested Development. Her work in television and commercials garnered two Emmy nominations.
