MLB Power Rankings: Can anyone stop the Astros?
The Mets did their best to attempt to unload Jay Bruce over the course of the offseason, but were unsuccessful. Imagine how much worse their record could be right now if they were successful in finding a trade partner to take the veteran outfielder. After flopping as a Met after being acquired last year, Bruce has 35 RBI on the season.
The injury to Yoenis Cespedes could have been a killer for the Mets, but it allowed them to discover that Michael Conforto was ready to take over in a starring role. The former first-round pick has 13 home runs an OPS over 1.000 in roughly 150 at-bats. The Mets are missing consistency from the rotation, but at least two of their outfielders are pacing the offense.
The White Sox rotation, made up of reclamation projects and Jose Quintana, continues to perform quite well. Miguel Gonzalez took a no-hit bid deep into his most recent start, Derek Holland has kept his ERA below 3.00, and Mike Pelfrey had a chance to win his third straight game as he took the ball on Wednesday night.
Chicago was building a rotation to help them claim the top draft pick in the 2018 draft, but they are exceeding even the most reasonable of expectations. The White Sox have the fourth-best ERA in the American League. If you pressed their feet to the fire, management would probably prefer to have a much worse record, but the White Sox can still get there, and with even more prospects after they auction off their trade pieces at the deadline.
