Tapwrit took home the white carnations at the 2017 Belmont Stakes, so watch their run to win the third leg of the Triple Crown

The 2017 Belmont Stakes was an interesting race from the onset. Obviously the third leg of the Triple Crown always has a bit of intrigue due to the length of the race. It’s a bit longer than both the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby, adding an element of anything can happen. However, there was even more adding to the excitement of the 149th running of the race.

In the 11-horse field for the 2017 Belmont Stakes, you wouldn’t find either Always Dreaming or Cloud Computing. The winners of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, respectively, weren’t in the field as they chose to ready for the summer season rather than run the third leg of the Triple Crown.

Subsequently, it was anyone’s race. Irish War Cry, Tapwrit and Lookin At Lee were the three favorites, but there were plenty of other horses that could’ve had a shot to win to the 2017 Belmont Stakes. Subsequently, it was a race to watch right from the get-go.

Irish War Cry set the pace early, as many expected them to. And he continued to set that place for quite some time, but the likes of Tapwrit, Patch and Meantime were all keeping close, well in range to make a move in the longest race in the Triple Crown. Gormley also held strong during this, but Lookin At Lee seemed to try and look to make a late move, though that was all for naught.

Tapwrit then made his move down the final stretch, trying to catch Irish War Cry. Ultimately, the leader for most of the race was unable to hold the lead and Tapwrit came through with the win. Watch the full race below.

After not running the Preakness, this was quite the redemptive moment for Tapwrit. He’s been a fast horse all year, but this certainly is his biggest victory yet.
