Penn State’s head wrestling coach Cael Sanderson is one of the most well-known names in the sport, and didn’t give himself a great look at the World Team Trials.

Penn State’s wrestling program had an incredible month in March, with five of their wrestlers taking home NCAA Division I national championships and their team adding another national team title to their resume.

Head coach Cael Sanderson is a big piece of that success, and he was there for his Nittany Lions at the US Senior Freestyle World Team Trials for freestyle wrestling on Saturday night. However, Sanderson definitely didn’t leave as smoothly as he came into the night.

Sanderson was in the corner David Taylor’s 86 KG finals match against J’den Cox, and the third match of the best-of-three series seemed to anger the Nittany Lions both on the mat and in the corner. Taylor lost his best-of-three series, losing two matches to one, including a controversial and close third match that saw some questionable officiating that went against Taylor.

Taylor pointed at the official to show his displeasure, and asked his coaches in the corner to throw the challenge block onto the mat. His head coach, Sanderson, decided to take it a step further, and threw the block at the referee, along with a towel. After that, Sanderson threw a chair onto the stage, and was ejected for all of his throwing efforts.

Taylor posted a video on Instagram apologizing for the actions after the match, and said that he was focusing on the positives coming out of the night and focused on getting better for his next shot.

Penn State had multiple wrestlers, both past and present, with some serious chances at making the World team, with Nico Megaludis, Zain Retherford, Frank Molinaro, and Taylor rounding out the talent for PSU at the event. The four all wrestle for the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, and Retherford will return to the Penn State roster as a senior in the fall.

The club had Retherford defeat Molinaro in the finals to make the World team, but they’ll have to wait until next time for Taylor to have his shot at redemption against Cox.
