NBA Free Agency 2017: 5 potential destinations for Derrick Rose
3. San Antonio Spurs
Name one team that has an aging point guard with no high-upside backup options, that has championship aspirations? Yep, the San Antonio Spurs. Now, the Spurs are not going to give Rose a contract that has any sort of high value, but Rose could be a good fit in the backcourt with Patty Mills and a declining Tony Parker. Rose fits well with Pau Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Kawhi Leonard.
Derrick could take a discount to chase a ring, but is he going to want to sign a long-term contract at age 28 without having a solid season underneath him in a few years? Rose has stated that he is okay taking less money because losing sucks so much. Presumably, a team like the Spurs, who do not lose, would welcome Derrick Rose with open arms at the right price. Because the Spurs usually prefer younger players without injury histories, this might be a stretch. From Rose’s perspective, he would have an opportunity to chase a ring and get meaningful minutes in a great system.
