Steph Curry is in line for a massive contract this summer. Will the Warriors be able to afford to keep him?

Steph Curry can get paid this summer… a staggering sum of money. As reported by ESPN.com news services, Steph is eligible for a five-year, $205 million contract extension this summer. Not too shabby for a 29 year old at the top of his game.

Per team owner Joe Lacob’s comments, the team will do “whatever it takes” to keep Steph in a Warriors jersey. The question is whether or not this is a realistic probability. The Warriors have a number of players hitting free agency, many of whom were key factors in winning their second championship in three years. Kevin Durant, Shaun Livingston and Andre Iguodala all fall into that category.

Durant can opt out of the deal he signed before this year to re-negotiate the terms. Allegedly, Durant is willing to take less money than the full extension he is eligible for as a 10 year NBA veteran. Durant has proven that winning is paramount to him, so it’s very realistic to assume he will do what’s needed in order to keep their core group intact.

For many players in the latter end of their careers, being on a contending team is much more important than a few extra dollars in their bank accounts. For guys like Livingston and Iguodala, this may very well be the case.

A team that has their priorities straight. It’s amazing what can happen when everyone buys into the system. Superstars and role players alike all know the common goal is to win, and they’ve been fortunate enough to reach the light at the end of the tunnel on two occasions. If they can continue on this path, who knows how many more championships they can win.
