The Toronto Blue Jays may be without second baseman Devon Travis for the rest of the season after knee surgery.

A season that has been riddled with injuries for the Blue Jays just took another turn for the worse. Second baseman Devon Travis may be done for the year after undergoing knee surgery to repair torn cartilage in his knee. It is the same knee he had surgery on last November.

Travis suffered a bone bruise and the tear June 4 against the New York Yankees and has not played since. Injuries have been an issue for Travis his entire career. He had two shoulder surgeries in 2015 and was forced to miss the end of the Jays postseason run with last year’s knee injury.

Toronto GM Ross Atkins laid out a timeline that could have Travis ready for action by the middle of September. Given the injury history of the promising second baseman, the Blue Jays are unlikely to push his recovery. He is likely done for the year.

"“Usually, these procedures are a couple of months and into three and four months,” Atkins said prior to Friday’s series opener against the Chicago White Sox at Rogers Centre. “On the low side, probably three months. We’ll see. There’s nothing concrete about it. We’re still learning about it. We’re hopeful that we could see him again (this season), but certainly we don’t want to put anything concrete out there about this year.”"

The loss of Travis for the rest of the year would be a major blow for the Blue Jays who were attempting to claw their way back into the AL playoff picture after an abysmal month of April. Travis himself was awful in the first month of the season, but was one of the best players in all of baseball in May. After batting .130/.193/.195 in April, he hit .364/.373/.646 in May with 16 doubles.

With Travis out, the Blue Jays have been using Ryan Goins and Darwin Barney at second base. Both of the potential replacements for Travis are batting below .230 on the year. The Blue Jays may seek a more useful hitter to fill second base for the rest of the season like Josh Harrison of the Pittsburgh Pirates or even Brian Dozier of the Minnesota Twins if he becomes available.
