The Dallas Mavericks’ brass has had talks about trading for the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Ricky Rubio.

The Minnesota Timberwolves’ Ricky Rubio has been linked to many trade rumors over the past year. Well, here is another one to add to the collection. According to Dallas Basketball’s Mike Fisher, the Dallas Mavericks are interested in trading for Rubio and have had “in-house talks” about the matter.

If Rubio were to be traded to the Mavericks, he would be joining Dirk Nowitzki and Harrison Barnes on their journey as they try to get the Mavs back to the NBA Playoffs. Though Rubio is not a reliable scorer, he is a very good passer, an excellent perimeter defender and can help the team out in those departments. Last season, Rubio averaged 11.1 points, 9.1 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.7 steals.

However, Rubio’s contract is quite hefty. Over the next two seasons, he will make roughly $29 million (over $14 million a year), and his contract isn’t over until the end of the 2019 NBA season. But the Mavericks are one of the rare teams with a lot of cap room. Only the Sacramento Kings, Denver Nuggets, and Philadelphia 76ers will have more space than them next season.

Another interesting tidbit about this rumored trade is Rubio’s new agent, Jeff Schwartz, has a noted relationship with the Mavericks, as many of Schwartz’s clients have played for the team. However, this most likely will not have any power in Dallas acquiring Rubio.

Dallas currently has a plethora of point guards on their roster. They have Seth Curry, Yogi Ferrell, J.J. Barea, and Devin Harris. If Rubio is traded to the Mavs, he would most likely be the starter and be the main point guard of the team.
