Wrestling fans have been clamoring for Daniel Bryan to return to the ring and actually compete, and Bryan said he’s doing the best he can to come back.

Daniel Bryan was arguably the most popular superstar on any WWE television for years during his run with his “Yes!” movement, but injuries derailed his career just as fast as it seemed to skyrocket.

Now, Bryan finds himself in the role of general manager on SmackDown LIVE, and gets to work in the ring in casual clothes, rather than ring gear. As much as it upsets WWE fans watching the product, it’s also been well-known how much it upsets Bryan. Both he and the fans are hoping for Bryan to come back and actually compete in the ring, and the former WWE champion shed some light on a possible return recently.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Bryan admitted that he’s trying his hardest to come back to the ring, but it’s not as simple as it may seem.

“I’m working on it,” Bryan said in the interview. “Wrestling is more of a creative outlet, and especially for somebody like me, I view it as my creative outlet. Not all WWE superstars and not all wrestlers view it that way, but that’s how I view it and that’s one of the ways my mind works creatively.”

Bryan also utilized an ominous comparison in his interview that might depress some fans who think their favorite superstars can wrestle forever.

“I always think of it in terms of music,” Bryan said. “You’re not always going to be a huge rock star in music, but musicians can play until the day they die. With sports, it’s different. You can’t always do it until the very end, and that’s a hard reality of sports.”

Bryan has notably been cleared by doctors in the past for a return, but not by any WWE medical staff. Hopefully we can get at least one more match out of Bryan in a WWE ring, but for now, we have to enjoy him as SmackDown LIVE‘s general manager on Tuesday nights.
