The Arizona Coyotes and head coach Dave Tippet have parted ways, effective immediately. Making a decision of this magnitude the day before the NHL Entry Draft asserts who is in charge of selecting the future prospects.

The Arizona Coyotes have parted ways with head coach Dave Tippet, effective immediately.

The announcement was made official by Coyotes owner, chairman, and governor Andrew Barroway today.

"“After some thoughtful discussions with [owner Andy Barroway], we both agreed that it was best for me to move on,” Tippett said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Coyotes and wish Andy and the entire organization all the best in the future.”"

The 55-year old head coach had been with the Coyotes organization since being hired before the 2009-10 season. During his eight seasons with the Coyotes, Tippett had a record of 282-257-83 overall. Tippett also won the Jack Adams, awarded to the best coach in the NHL that season, back in 2010 after finishing second in the Pacific Division, going 50-25-7, and losing in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Before coming to the Coyotes, Tippett was the head coach of the Dallas Stars for six seasons. The Stars went 274-156-28-37 overall during his tenure there, though Tippett never made it past the Conference Finals with either the Stars or Coyotes organizations.

Despite sporting a rather solid record of 553-413-28-120 and three division titles, Tippett has never made the Stanley Cup Final. While it should be taken into account that the Coyotes have been in a rebuilding process for the last half decade, this wasn’t enough to save the Tippett’s job.

The reports as to why Dave Tippett is no longer the head coach of the Coyotes comes down to contract considerations. There are no certain details, but it is very likely that Tippett was looking for more money than the Coyotes and general manager John Chayka were willing to give him after five straight seasons without playoff hockey.

There is no immediate replacement, and the Coyotes will be looking to fill the vacancy soon.
