The Ottawa Senators have signed back-up goaltender Mike Condon to a three-year contract extension. The contract is worth $7.2 million in total over the three years.

The Ottawa Senators and backup goaltender Mike Condon have agreed to a three-year, $7.2 million contract. This will see Condon stay in the Canadian capital through the 2019-20 NHL season.

The 27-year-old has played in 96 games to this point in his NHL career with three different organizations; the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators.

Condon played in 55 games, starting 51 of them, in his first full season in the NHL with the Canadiens in 2015-16. In what was a ‘trial by fire’ season for Condon, he had a record of 21-25-6, a 2.71 goals-against-average, and a rather shocking .903 save percentage. It should, however, be taken into account that the Canadiens were a team in turmoil and gave him very little help adjusting to a full starting goalie’s workload.

Condon played a single game in Pittsburgh before finding his new home in Ottawa. He filled in admirably for Craig Anderson last year when he was away with his wife. Playing in 40 games, starting 38 of them, Condon recorded a 19-14-6 record, a 2.50 goals-against-average, and a much-improved .914 save percentage.

The season that Condon had was enough to see the Senators trust him as the future back-up, signing him to the three-year contract today with $2.4 million AAV. It is a one-way contract with the Senators, and the full details of the yearly breakdown can be found below.

The one thing that now becomes unclear is the future of Andrew Hammond. All three goaltenders in Ottawa are now on one-way contracts, and Hammond is set to make $1.35 million next season as a third goaltender. This means that the Senators now have a total of $7.95 million in cap space tied up in just their netminders, making it a realistic possibility that Hammond will be available in any future trades.
