In trade talks with the New York Yankees, the San Diego Padres aimed high by asking for Gleyber Torres, the Yankees’ top prospect who’s currently injured.

You have to love MLB trade rumors season. No offer is too outlandish and teams tend to ask about everyone — even injured top prospects.

According Jon Heyman, the San Diego Padres and New York Yankees talked trade recently. The Padres have some pieces that could certainly help the Yankees, like left-handed reliever Brad Hand and infielder Yangervis Solarte, who ironically was traded to the Padres by the Yankees for third baseman Chase Headley.

Padres GM AJ Preller certainly aimed high in talking trade. High as in top prospect Gleyber Torres.

"The San Diego Padres, still seeking their shortstop of the future, and are said to have asked the New York Yankees about top prospect Gleyber Torres.Padres GM A.J. Preller didn’t return a text, and Yankees GM Brian Cashman declined comment specifically on Torres, saying only that “teams are interested in a lot of our prospects.”"

Torres is currently out for the season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery on his non-throwing elbow after an awkward slide into home plate. In 55 games, between AA and AAA, Torres hit .287 with an .863 OPS, seven homers and 34 RBI. He’d probably be in the majors right now if it wasn’t for his injury due to the rash of injuries the Yankees have had at the major league level.

Hand is currently 1-4 with a 2.53 ERA in 38 games. Solarte is currently hitting .268 with 10 homers and 40 RBI in 71 games.

I wonder how fast Cashman said no to Preller’s attempt to get Torres. Torres is a part of the Yankees future core with Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez.

You can’t blame Preller for trying, however, there was no way Hand and Solarte and Petco Park was going to get Torres from the Yankees.
