Athletics Get
RHP Brock Stewart
RHP Dennis Santana
OF Alex Verdugo
Dodgers Get
RHP Sonny Gray

Why the A’s should do it: The A’s are undergoing a youth movement. Stephen Vogt and Trevor Plouffe have been shown the door already. Sonny Gray is a big chip to play and he’s going to start getting expensive. The A’s need to look to the future and with this trade they do, as they look to the Dodgers again for the second straight year at the deadline. In this deal, they get Verdugo who could be their center fielder for now and in the future. Stewart can take Gray’s place in the rotation right now as they take a look at him the rest of the way and Santana could be arm for their rotation a couple of years down the road.

Why the Dodgers should do it:  The Dodgers need another big arm behind Clayton Kershaw. Rich Hill, Brandon McCarthy, Scott Kazmir and Hyun-Jin Ryu have all battled injuries. Kenta Maeda has been up an down and Julio Urias is lost for this season and most of next if not all of it. Gray has an injury history as well, however, if Gray can stay healthy, he can better than all of those guys. Plus, Gray will be under team control through 2020.

They do give up two of their top seven prospects according to MLBpipeline.com. Still, the Dodgers have one of the deepest farm systems in the game today, so they should be able to withstand some of those losses. Plus, they get a controllable arm for their rotation.
