NBA Free Agency rumors: 76ers sign Amir Johnson to one-year deal
The Philadelphia 76ers continue to add veterans on short contracts, now signing ex-Celtics’ forward Amir Johnson to a one-year deal.
Like the Philadelphia 76ers’ star center always says, just Trust the Process.
The 76ers already reportedly signed free-agent sharpshooter J.J. Redick to a one-year contract worth $23 million. Philadelphia needs shooters and scoring around their young playmakers. They also need guys in the locker room to be veteran leaders and show them how to win basketball games.
Well, the front office in Philadelphia isn’t settling any time soon. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the 76ers are signing ex-Boston Celtics forward Amir Johnson to a one-year deal that’s worth $11 million.
The 76ers are adding another veteran player to the mix, and the big key here is that it’s only a one-year deal. This allows Philadelphia to continuously have salary cap space and not be tied down by any bad contract. Yes, you may have to overpay in the short term, but guess what? The 76ers have that cap space to give away anyway, so might as well add veterans for next season.
At 30 years of age, Johnson averaged 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He shot 58 percent from the field, most of the points coming very close to the basket. He was a key bench player over the past few years for the Celtics, who deemed that he wasn’t worth a long-term contract, especially with the selection of Jayson Tatum.

The 76ers are continuing to build something for the future. They already have Markelle Fultz, Joel Embiid, Dario Saric and Ben Simmons, and now they’ll add Redick and Johnson to the mix. This doesn’t even account for Robert Covington and Richaun Holmes, other role players who continue to contribute for Philly.
Good work, Bryan Colangelo. Philadelphia is getting behind you and the 76ers are going to be a serious threat in the Eastern Conference next season.
