NBA Free Agency rumors: Charlotte Hornets sign Michael Carter-Williams

The Charlotte Hornets added another piece as they try to rebuild their team through free agency.

According to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer, the Hornets agreed to terms with point guard Michael Carter-Williams Saturday. The deal is worth an affordable $2.7 million and is just for one season.

Carter-Williams was a hot commodity going into NBA Free Agency. Many teams were looking at the 25-year-old point guard, including the Oklahoma City Thunder and the New York Knicks.

The former Syracuse standout has made a decent career for himself but has been unable to avoid injury. He has only appeared in 70 games in one season, his rookie year. When healthy, he has been a valuable point guard for whatever team he was on. During his career, he has averaged 13 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game.

The Hornets could use an all-around point guard like Carter-Williams to give Kemba Walker some rest.

Walker was the bright spot for the Hornets, who finished 11th in the Eastern Conference, this past season.

Walker had an amazing season, averaging a career high 23.2 points per game. However, he didn’t have much time for rest. Now, the Hornets front office hopes that the former Rookie of the Year can give Walker time off the court but still contribute to victories.

He can use his big size as a point guard to confuse opposing defenses when contrasted with Walker’s short stature. Carter-Williams is 6-foot-6, while Kemba Walker is just 6-foot-1.

The Hornets have slowly been restructuring their team to become competitive once again. Most notable was their acquisition of Nicholas Batum, who allowed the team to make the playoffs during his first season in 2015-2016.

This low risk move will pay off for the Charlotte Hornets this season as they hope to return to the postseason.
