NBA Free Agency rumors: Knicks interested in Rajon Rondo

Rajon Rondo was cut by the Bulls earlier in free agency, and he may already have another suitor in the Eastern Conference.

Rajon Rondo only lasted one year with the Chicago Bulls before getting released, but it looks like he may not last long on the free agent market this offseason after getting cut.

Rondo was plagued by injuries in the postseason in the team’s battle with the Boston Celtics, but was an important piece of their lineup in the first few games of the series. Now, it appears one of the Celtics’ rivals in the Eastern Conference may be looking to add the former Celtics point guard to their lineup.

According to Michael Scotto of Basketball Insiders, the New York Knicks have emerged as a team going after Rondo, and they’ve reportedly begun their pursuit of the point guard already.

The news shouldn’t be too shocking, as the Knicks look like they could be losing Derrick Rose in free agency to the Milwaukee Bucks. Rondo would provide a useful replacement for Rose, who also spent just a year with his team before heading into the free agent market.

The point guards out on the market are plentiful, but not exactly in the Knicks’ pay range right now. With Rose likely gone as a cheap option, Rondo would give them an easier time financially than some others this offseason while still being a talented player to pursue.

The Knicks, now rejuvenated following the firing of Phil Jackson as the team’s president, may provide an appealing option for Rondo if the team was to offer him a deal soon. It’d give him the chance to work with the likes of Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis, and battle with his former team in the Celtics multiple times throughout the year with the ability to play spoiler.
