Justin Turner, Mike Moustakas win 2017 MLB All-Star Final Vote

The 2017 MLB All-Star Game final vote winners have been announced.

No matter how All-Star voting is done — fans, players, coaches or a mix — there are always snubs every year in every sport. Major League Baseball has taken a route to add a player to each league’s roster for the All-Star Game, with fan voting determining the final man for each team.

In the American League, this year’s final vote candidates were Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas, Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts, Rays first baseman Logan Morrison, Yankees shortstop Did Gregorius and Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus.

On the National League side, the final vote candidates were Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, Marlins first baseman Justin Bour, Rockies first baseman Mark Reynolds and Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon.

Turner and Moustakas were leading the voting in each league seemingly all week, and had to be considered the front-runners. Ahead of next Tuesday night’s mid-summer classic at Marlins Park in Miami, the winners of the final vote were announced on Thursday night.

Turner had a strong case to make the National League roster outright, with a .384/.473/.561 slash-line entering Thursday (61 games played). That .384 average would lead both leagues by a good margin if he had enough at-bats to qualify, but Turner missed three weeks in May and early June with a hamstring issue and he has just 219 at-bats. That doesn’t measure up to the standard of 3.1 at-bats per team game right now, but if he remains healthy Turner should get there at some point.

Moustakas is second in the American League with 25 home runs, as he narrows in on the single-season Royals franchise record of 36 home runs set by Steve Balboni in 1985. Moustakas will also be participating in the Home Run Derby on Monday night, with a first-round matchup against Twins third baseman Miguel Sano.
