5 reasons Sam Darnold should stay at USC
By Trey Daubert
4. Win a National Title
This one seems pretty obvious, right? Every player wants to go out a champion. We even saw this with Gordon Hayward where he and Brad Stevens had ‘unfinished business’, but that’s a different story for another day. Players want to win regardless of what level the sport is being played at. Darnold’s first goal this season will likely strive towards bringing a title back to USC.
For a storied University like Southern California, a star quarterback will always be appreciated for thriving in Los Angeles. People in L.A. love their Trojans and Darnold would gain a ton of recognition by becoming a champion. Picture Sam Darnold riding the Trojan Horse on the heels of a National Championship season. It sounds pretty tempting, right?
What if Darnold does come up short this season? Coming back for that unfinished business, so to speak, makes sense. USC hasn’t won a national title since 2004 where Matt Leinart was revered for doing so. The last time the Trojans were in the National Title Game, 2005, they got beasted and feasted on by Vince Young. Let’s get that sour taste out of our mouths. Oh yeah, not to mention, that season was vacated because of NCAA violations anyway.
USC was as big of a talking point as there was in sports when the school is on the winning track. Beating Alabama, Ohio State, or Michigan for a national title is no small task, but what if Darnold pulls it off? Better yet, what if he can win two or three national titles? He would be talked about as one of the best collegiate signal callers the sport has ever seen.
