Samoa Joe is basically a juggernaut that has made Brock Lesnar look like an actual human being. Do you know how hard that is to do? Joe gets his first shot at Lesnar and the WWE Universal Championship at Great Balls of Fire. Here’s five reasons why The Samoan Submission Machine should win the gold.
Samoa Joe is what happens when you don’t give the fullback on your football team enough love over time. Eventually, he becomes this giant bowling ball of anger, frustration and then he’s going to flatten you with the first chance he gets.
Joe has been all over the globe and won every title that TNA had to offer. He’s still regarded as one of the greatest — if not — the greatest Ring of Honor World Championship holder in history. Joe finally came to WWE family a couple years ago and had one of the brand’s best feud under Triple H’s watch with Finn Balor over the NXT Championship.
Joe’s one of those guys in WWE currently that has you like, “How in the hell is he in WWE?” To this day, it’s still surreal to see guys like Samoa Joe, Kevin Owens, AJ Styles and Finn Balor in WWE. They’re some of the darlings of the hardcore wrestling fans across the United States.
Then, when you add in the fact that three of those guys have already been world champions on WWE’s main roster — including the first-ever Universal Champion in Balor — it leads you to think about Sunday and how special the main event between Samoa Joe and Brock Lesnar could be.
Lesnar, who won the Universal title at WrestleMania from Goldberg, hasn’t defended the gold since winning it. You rarely see champions lose their gold in their first title defenses, especially a guy like Lesnar, but he should.
Here’s five reasons why Samoa Joe should win the Universal Championship on Sunday night at Great Balls of Fire, starting with their current feud.
5. Joe has run circles around the champion heading into Sunday
I know, wrestling is all about storytelling and finding the proper ways to present faux tales to the viewers at home and in the arena.
But, if we’re basing this discussion on why Joe should beat Lesnar, it’s because he’s dominated this feud. That element of Joe’s ruthlessness and dominance has to do with the storytelling, but it makes sense for Joe to win this match with what has been presented to us on screen in the last month or so.
Sure, Lesnar’s a part-timer and we don’t see him unless it’s time for a “Big Four” show or if the ratings are truly taking a hit for WWE. But, look at what Joe has done in recent weeks. He gained the No. 1 contendership by tapping out Finn Balor and beating three former world champions in Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Bray Wyatt in the process. That’s no small accomplishment.
Then, Joe truly became a monster when he gave Lesnar the loudest of messages when he locked Paul Heyman in the Coquina Clutch and put The Beast’s advocate to sleep. Since then, it’s been Joe showing no fear against Lesnar, including almost choking him out from behind during one of Lesnar’s entrances on RAW.
What validated Lesnar as inhuman was when he had his run to remember after ending The Undertaker’s WrestleMania win streak? Winning the gold in dominant fashion over John Cena over the summer.
