The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed forward Jeff Green to a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum.

The Cavaliers have thrown their hat into the free agent market after all. The Cavs have signed Jeff Green to a one-year deal.

After spending the past year with the Magic, Green will take a massive pay cut from the $15 million he earned last season. Green averaged 9.2 points and 3.1 rebounds per game in the 2016-2017 NBA regular season.

Jeff Zillgit of USA Today was the first to report the news:

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst first reported the details of the deal.

Green, 30, spent his first year with the Seattle SuperSonics and had his best years with the Sonics and Thunder. The former Georgetown product has also played for the Celtics, Grizzlies and Clippers. Now with Cleveland, Green figures to play a key role off the bench.

With the Celtics improving with the Gordon Hayward signing, the Cavs added a former Celtic to fend off the Cs. Cleveland bested Boston in five games during the Eastern Conference Finals, but add Green in order to remain favorites in the East. With Jimmy Butler, Paul George and Paul Millsap headed from East to West, the Cavs’ path to the Finals seems pretty clear. As long as LeBron is running the show, Cleveland should return to the Finals once again.

With the Green signing, this could spell the end for Richard Jefferson, who could conceivably retire. As the Cavs try to catch the Warriors, Cleveland also added Jose Calderon as a point guard option. James Jones, Dahntay Jones, Deron Williams and Derrick Williams are all impending free agents for the Cavs. Jamal Crawford is a player who the team is also reportedly interested in adding. Cleveland, however, is over the cap and can only use the mid-level exception to improve its roster.
