1. Opportunity Knocks
Let’s return to the idea of a trade for Pollock. According to that same Rosenthal report, Patrick Corbin might also be available should the right deal come along, and in both cases it makes sense.
Even if the Diamondbacks don’t need to work them into a trade before the deadline, they might still look to see what they can get for them. Chris Costillo at MLB Daily Dish points out that the Diamondbacks have a lot of money tied up with ace pitcher Zack Greinke already (to the tune of $34 million), and they’ll be looking to extend Paul Goldschmidt in the future (he’s currently making $8.875 million). Dealing Pollock and Corbin will help ease the burden on the team’s payroll while providing leverage to make good deals.
The bottom line is that of the teams in the NL West, the Diamondbacks are in a great position this season. They haven’t been hit with too many injuries and they have been playing consistent baseball. With only a few games away from the top spot in the division while also holding the top spot in the wild card race, they’re in cruise control.
Next: One prospect each MLB team should call up
The glaring issue comes when looking ahead to 2018, when nine players on the current roster become eligible for arbitration. That puts the Arizona front office in a position to make some deals because they won’t have the kind of money to keep the band together. Finding some deals and steals now might help ease the pain of losing players to arbitration in the off-season.
