After missing out on Nemanja Matic, Manchester United have set their sights on Tottenham’s Eric Dier.
With their reported interest in Nemanja Matic now dead in the water, Jose Mourinho and Manchester United are looking elsewhere to strengthen their midfield and defense. They have shifted their focus to another Premier League rival in Tottenham, expressing interest in defensive midfielder Eric Dier.
Dier, 23, is a versatile player in the back end of the lineup for Tottenham. Dier appeared in 36 league matches for Tottenham last season, starting 34 of them. Dier showed off his versatility, effectively slotting in at both center-back and defensive midfielder for Spurs last year.

Dier would be a fantastic addition to the line-up for what is already one of the strongest sides defensively in the Premier League. The ratio of games at defensive midfielder and center-back, however, would likely even out to 50-50 under Mourinho. While there are a few players capable of playing defensive midfielder, Dier would be a better option.
With Michael Carrick showing slight traces of slowing down, a replacement for the future was needed. Dier could slot in nicely in front of the back four, allowing Carrick to lighten his workload and possibly lengthen his career.

Carrick wouldn’t be the only beneficiary of Manchester United signing Dier. This would also allow Ander Herrera to play a more advanced role and not have to be the fill in for Carrick when he is in need of a rest. While Herrera is a solid option at defensive midfielder, he is far more effective in a more advanced position in the midfield for United.
There is also the positive that Dier played most of last season as a center-back. The signing of would help strengthen the back line, whether he plays in the defensive midfield role or lines up next to Eric Bailly in central defense.
