MLB All-Star Game: Robinson Cano hits go-ahead home run in 10th to win (Video)

The MLB All-Star Game went to extra innings, but didn’t last long after that when Robinson Cano launched a solo home run to end it in the top of the 10th.

With the MLB All-Star Game now not deciding home-field advantage in the World Series, many wondered if the game would even play extra innings if the opportunity arose. Well, the chance came, they did, and it ended almost just as quickly thanks to Robinson Cano.

The Seattle Mariners star clobbered a solo shot off of Chicago Cubs pitcher Wade Davis in the top of the 10th inning to give the American League a 2-1 win in the game in a lackluster offensive performance from both sides. Craig Kimbrel took home the win, with Andrew Miller taking the save.

Cano’s home run was the fourth go-ahead homer in extras in All-Star Game history, and we hadn’t seen an extra innings home run in exactly 50 years since Tony Perez did it in 1967. Ironically, it comes on the same night that Perez threw out one of the first pitches for the game, so everything came full circle.

Luckily we didn’t get a repeat of the last extra innings All-Star Game, when the American League won in 15 innings nine years ago back in 2008. However, for the AL, they got the same extra innings luck with their win, and earned their fifth straight All-Star game victory in the process with the homer.

The homer topped off a fun night of baseball that wasn’t so eventful on the scoreboard, but certainly had its entertaining moments otherwise. Obviously taking away home-field advantage as the stakes for the game was a solid move, but it’s funny to see a competitive game, with a clutch home run to win it, all come right after the stakes get taken away from the contest.
