Late Trade Deadline Surprises

There’s always a chance that players will come available late in July. Like other teams sitting in solid positions in the standings, the Rockies can afford to wait until late in the game to make a trade. It’s quite possible that waiting could net them some better trade options.

Teams that are struggling might be more willing to part with key players as they move closer to July. Rebuilding teams will simultaneously look for power players and future help, so guys like Raisel Iglesias (Reds) and Tommy Kahnle (White Sox) could come available should the right deal come up.

With flexibility on their side, the Rockies can be patient here. They can see what happens after the All-Star Game and watch what other teams are doing before making any transactions.

We have already seen the Twins pick up Bartolo Colon in a matter of days after his release, so there’s no telling who might pop up. My guess is that we’ll see at least one member of the Padres on the Rockies roster before the end of the trade deadline.
