MLB Trade Deadline 2017: 5 best spots for Ian Kinsler
By Ynal Al-Ouri
The Detroit Tigers could look to start selling pieces, and move toward a rebuild as we approach the trade deadline. Ian Kinsler stands as one of their main trade chips.
For the past two seasons, the Detroit Tigers have seemed to be leaning toward a rebuild, only to balk at the idea at the last minute. Unfortunately for them, it may be time to finally kick the tires on the idea and build toward their future.
The Tigers have a few key players that have already attracted many suitors across the league, and Ian Kinsler finds himself among those players. Kinsler hasn’t had a particularly good year thus far for Detroit, but his track record speaks for it self, and suggests he’ll be fine moving forward.
With a career batting average at .275, and still possessing some pop and speed, he would be a welcome sight atop many teams lineups. Whether a team is trying to work their way back up into the standings, or trying to maintain their current lead, here are the five teams that could benefit from acquiring Kinsler before the July 31 deadline.
5. Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays find themselves in a similar predicament as the Tigers, with a potential rebuild being on the horizon. However, Toronto’s brass believes they can still compete in their division, and can overcome a sluggish start to the season as they have done so in the past.
The Blue Jays would receive an instant upgrade to their keystone position by acquiring Kinsler, as they have been without Devon Travis for most of the season. Now that Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki are healthy and ready for the second half, a player like Kinsler could be the shot in the arm this team desperately needs.
Kinsler is also under contract for next season, so he would be more than just a rental for this season. If Toronto can string together some wins in the early going of the second half, then acquiring Kinsler may help them get into the playoffs for a third straight season.
