Roger Federer set a record by winning his eighth Wimbledon title, and did so without breaking a sweat. Twitter has unanimously proclaimed him the GOAT.
Remember when Father Time caught up to Roger Federer? Thank God that’s a thing of the past. With his win over Marin Cilic at Wimbledon, Federer has now won his second Grand Slam of 2017, as well as his fifth tournament. But considering he did so without dropping a set, it might be his greatest achievement to date.
Had he played the French Open, he could’ve won that as well. But perhaps he let Rafael Nadal have that moment so the two of them could revive the GOAT discussion, if only temporarily. But now that Federer is up to 19 Grand Slam titles, and eight at Wimbledon, that question should be put to bed.
As expected, everyone on Twitter lavished the Swiss with praise:

The fact that Federer is able to be at his best at the age of 35 is simply remarkable. It should only be a matter of time before he reaches the world No. 1 ranking again. He has a shot at claiming his 20th Grand Slam at the U.S. Open, but if it doesn’t happen this year, it’s bound to happen before he calls an end to his career.
Coupled with Federer’s resurgence, however, is Novak Djokovic’s fall. He has went from No. 1 to No. 4 in the world ATP rankings, and has so far failed to make it past the quarterfinal stage in every Grand Slam this year. Looking across the board, it’s hard to find anyone who can serve as a foil to Federer. That means the question isn’t if he’ll win again, it’s how many.

Even though there’s still five months to go, Roger Federer should be an early favorite for SI’s Sportsman of the Year.
