The 2017 British Open will take place from Royal Birkdale this week. How much money will the winner of the third major of the year take home?

One of the most prestigious golf events of the year takes place at Royal Birkdale this week. The 2017 British Open will kick off and another golfer will have a chance to win a major this year and take home the Claret Jug. The course in Southport should provide quite the challenge for golf’s best.

Besides the distinction of winning a major tournament and getting to take home the Claret Jug, the winner of the British Open is also going to go home with a lot of money. The winner’s purse for the event is $1.845 million.

That’s a nice hefty chunk of change for winning the event. In total, there will be $10.25 million in prize money that will be dispersed out among the golfers that finish in the top 70 for the event this week.

While the event does take place in England, the prize money awarded out to the top 70 is still going to be in U.S. Dollars. All eyes will be on Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson coming into the event by virtue of being the big names in the event.

However, with a crowded field that includes Brooks Koepka coming off of a big win in the U.S. Open. Regardless of which golfer is the favorite, the one that does indeed end up winning will be going home with a lot of money.
